Open Ceilings is a literary magazine published by Mechanism Press, a student-run publishing house at UC Davis. My position as Layout Director was an internship role during my final year in the Design Program at UC Davis.
This magazine is a collection of creative writing, artwork, and photography from the UC Davis community. To achieve an editorial design fitting this publication's identity, I implemented pops of color, exaggerated pull quotes, linework embellishments, and a circular theme to break up the monotony of vertical text columns.
As the magazine’s content was selected, “undergrowth” was chosen as the theme and title for this issue. Circles became the visual theme, representing the relationship between the above and the below.
An earth-tone color palette was selected with a different hue for each section of the magazine. Bold section dividers provide a form of visual navigation to the reader as they flip through the pages.
The typography combination is a contemporary Sans Serif title font, Mr Eaves XL Mod, and a classic serif for the body copy, Crimson Text.
The final aesthetic is unique and contemporary, just like the publication's content. Thin linework and simple graphics added visual interest without distracting the readers from the text. Colorful and scale exaggerate the pull quotes to catch the attention of any potential reader flipping through the pages.
